Recurrence Spectroscopy in Time-Dependent Fields
Closed orbit theory is a semiclassical technique for explaining the spectra of Rydberg atoms in external elds. We derive a new version of closed orbit theory that applies when the external elds are time-dependent. We compare the results of this theory with experiments on lithium atoms in a weak oscillating electric eld.

Goethe-Universität, 60054 Frankfurt am Main, Germany and Institut de Recherches Subatomiques, 23 rue du Loess BP 28, 67037 Strasbourg Cedex, France (Dated: October 27, 2003) Abstract The exact fermion propagator in a classical time-dependent gauge field is derived by solving the equation of motion for the Dirac Green’s functions. From the retarded propagat...
متن کاملDistinguished trajectories in time dependent vector fields.
We introduce a new definition of distinguished trajectory that generalizes the concepts of fixed point and periodic orbit to aperiodic dynamical systems. This new definition is valid for identifying distinguished trajectories with hyperbolic and nonhyperbolic types of stability. The definition is implemented numerically and the procedure consists of determining a path of limit coordinates. It h...
متن کاملFermion pair production in time-dependent fields
Particle production in classical bosonic fields is a topic of continuing interest in QED and QCD. In strong fields processes with multiple couplings to the classical field are not parametrically suppressed by powers of the coupling constant g. In the absence of an additional scale, they have to be taken into account to all orders. In the following let us consider fermion production based on the...
متن کاملRecurrence spectroscopy of atoms in electric fields: Scattering in the presence of bifurcations
Closed-orbit theory gives a semiclassical formula for the photoabsorption oscillator strength density of atoms in external fields. The oscillator strength can be calculated from the properties of the classical orbits of the highly excited electron moving in the combined Coulomb and electric field. The deviation from the Coulomb potential due to an alkali-metal atom core causes scattering betwee...
